Jaisalmer is the north eastern princely city of Rajasthan. Known as the Golden City, it stands on yellow sandstone and is adorned by a fort. You will find a lot of Jain temples in the city which is located right in the middle of the Thar desert, with extreme temperatures amidst dry and arid conditions.
Jaisalmer fort is one of the main attractions of the city. The massive sandstone walls is a brilliant sight amongst the sunset. The city is also very famous for its Desert festival that happens every year in January / February showcasing the famous Kalbelia dance and folk music. Another major tourist attraction is the Sam sand dunes, which are a band of dunes and very famous excursion points, specially if you are looking at solitary desert experience. Other places of interest include the Desert culture centre and museum, the heritage museum, fort palace (which is the former ruler’s abode). While in Jaisalmer, you should have the camping experience in the golden sands of the Thar desert, with authentic Rajasthani culture and cuisines. Camel safari and jeep safari over the dunes are very famous to explore the golden sands of the sam sand dunes. The city is also famous for its textile work and handicrafts. Another major tourist attraction includes the abandoned Kuldhara village in Jaisalmer, which is possible to explore on Camel rides.
The best time to visit Jaisalmer is from October onwards till March, when the weather is pleasant for a perfect holiday to this royal Indian state.
